#KC Local Love + SALE!

We are so thrilled to partner with another local KC company, NEVA,  for this awesome 4th of July SALE! What's better than getting in shape, hydrating & support local business...while looking fabulous?! Let us tell you a bit about these awesome women - here's what our friend & co-founder of Neva had to tell us:

"Neva Activewear is made up of two Kansas City moms who design and produce high-quality custom activewear while hiring women across the world to hand-stitch inspirational messages on each piece. Our goal is to offer meaningful employment and to empower these women to be able to care for their families in ways that were previously inaccessible to them. Our latest line is eco-friendly, made in America and hand-stitched by women (immigrants, students, moms and grandmoms) right here in the Kansas City area. As the mothers of small children ourselves, we understand how important it is to be able to bring home an income while still caring for your family. Designed in beautiful colors with an active lifestyle in mind, NEVA is the perfect addition to your wardrobe. We all wear activewear every day, so why not make it mean more?"

Want to get in on this SALE? Check out the TANKS on Neva's website (use code TANKS25) and the TUMBLERS on the La Plates website (no code needed).

God Bless the USA!

Meat Mitch BBQ

One of our favorite fall events in Kansas City is the American Royal BBQ. On this night, teams from all over the US host tents to show off their BBQ skills. While I'm not an expert - I like a good beef brisket sammy + a cold beer! We enjoy stopping by a lot of parties, but we seem to end up at the Meat Mitch event for most of the night. This team knows how to throw a party!

Now you can take the BBQ home with you. Meat Mitch has bottled his BBQ goodness...if only I could get his brisket to go!

Rock Chalk Ball 2010

Although I am not a KU grad, the Jayhawks have welcomed me as a transplant...far from my Redhawks, it's my hometown fav! This weekend was their annual alumni fundraiser, the Rock Chalk Ball. We decided to bring a little La Plates love to the table - it was a fun night!

How to Monogram a Hurricane : Eddie Ross, teacher

When our fav KC blogger mentioned that Eddie Ross would be teaching a class here, we knew we had to be a part...once we heard it involved a monogram, we were thrilled! We gathered at the fabulous Creative Candles. Greeted by Eddie & Jaithan, we mixed and mingled, then got to work.

Supplies:
hurricane, vase, whatever you want to monogram
Armour Etch
contact paper - cut to 8.5 x 11
exacto knife
Sharpie
tape
paint brush
printed out monogram - on 8.5 x 11

While nothing can compare with Eddie & Jaithan's step-by-step direction...hand holding...wine pouring we're going to try to give you our interpretation. We're going to do it again, for sure!
Step 1: Tape Contact Paper, grid side down, over your monogram, onto table.
Trace monogram with Sharpie.

Step 2: Peal contact paper off and apply to hurricane.
Make sure it's straight and no air bubbles...easier said than done, but important!

Step 3: Using your exacto, cut your letters out & peal away, leaving letters exposed.
Clean surface area with paper towel, sprayed with Windex.

Step 4: Apply Armour Etch with paint brush - you want it thick, but not dripping.
Let stand for 10 minutes.

Step 5: Rinse off Armour Etch, remove contact paper & tape, clean glass with Windex.

Zoom!

Last night was the grand opening of the new location of Zoom (816.842.8697) - a fabulous toy store. It was planned in coordination with the recent launch of M Magazine & benefited The Toy & Miniature Museum of Kansas City.

Holy cow, you would have thought we were at Disney World! As we entered the front of the store, employees had "egg races" for the kids...after they competed, they got to pick a toy. As we walked through the front doors, both kids signed up for (and eventually won) door prizes. Throughout the store, employees had MORE games and activities set up to play - and win more prizes! Outside, there were delicious treats for all ages. Topsy's provided popcorn & their famous cherry limeades...I saw a bar, but didn't make it over. Up, Up & Away provided the balloon entertainment - a huge hit with my boys.

Overall, the event was a hit with the entire family. We can't wait to head back down the The Plaza for another Zoom adventure!

Meet Kansas City

I was born and raised in Indiana, attended college in Ohio and spent a few years in Georgia. I now reside in the Kansas City area and friends ask me to describe the city. I always get the question, "Which side to do you live on, Kansas or Missouri?" I was recently on the Spirit Magazine site and now have a resource to send family and friends - Meet Kansas City. It's the best article about Kansas City's history, current hot spots and people making a difference in the area. Kathleen Leighton did a fabulous job summing up Our Town.

The City of Fountains really does have some great ones!
